THIS Is Why Wedding Dresses Are White

Have you ever stopped to think about why a white wedding dress is the traditional choice for many brides? Vogue recently enlightened us, revealing that the popularity of the hue was first sparked by one very famous royal.

“It was Queen Victoria, who married Prince Albert in 1840, who set today’s custom for brides,” Vogue explains. “Not only were royal weddings much copied then, as they are now, but the queen’s choice was more than fashionable; it was symbolic: White is a color associated with purity and innocence, qualities particularly admired in the tightly laced Victorian era.”

Of course, not every culture subscribes to the white gown philosophy, but it’s undoubtedly a hugely popular choice worldwide—and now we know that we have Queen Victoria to thank for it.
