What Made Anna Wintour Burst Into Tears Before the CFDA Awards
1:37:00 PMAnna Wintour may be known for being fearless and decisive, but that doesn't mean she can't show off her sentimental side every once and a while. The editor in chief chatted with host André Leon Talley in the latest episode of the Vogue podcast and revealed a recent major moment that got her emotional: when Hillary Clinton became the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee.
The topic came up after Talley mentioned how new Vogue covergirl Amy Schumer is a major supporter of Hillary Clinton. "I was told at the CFDA [Awards], you broke into tears because it was such a historical night when Hillary became the first woman [presidential nominee]," Talley said.
Wintour further explained just how much the news meant to her: "I was backstage waiting to go on to make my presentation, when, like everybody else, the great news flashed up on my iPhone screen," she told Talley in the podcast. "I just couldn't let the historic moment go unrecognized, so I ad-libbed [the speech]. But I'm thrilled that I did."
She went on the compare the momentous occasion to another political milestone: "It was similar to when we were so moved by President Obama's nomination. I think it's an equally important moment and we look forward to great things in the months to come."
