Franca Sozzani, the editor-in-chief of Vogue Italia for the last 28 years, has died. As reported by Vogue’s Hamish Bowles in a touching tribute to the industry vet and—no exaggeration here—legend, Sozzani passed away at the age of 66, leaving behind a lifetime’s worth of achievements both and in and out of the fashion industry.

On one hand Sozzani will be remembered for the incredible imagery she brought to the pages of the publication she lead, most famously taking risks and stepping outside the expected. She used her position in the world of fashion, as well as the Vogue Italia covers, to open up conversations about race ("The Black Issue," circa 2008) and the environment ("Water & Oil," circa 2010), for example. But as Bowles points out, Sozzani’s legacy will also live on in the work she’s done to support the United Nations World Food Programme, Fashion 4 Development, among other philanthropic projects that served underprivileged members of society.

Furthermore, Sozzani’s life was recently honored by her son, Francesco Carrozzini, who debuted Franca: Chaos and Creation at this year's Venice Film Festival. “Francesco perfectly captures her drive and determination, her fearlessness, her beauty, her wild imagination, and her totally original way of fusing social issues with fashion,” said Anna Wintour in a personal ode. “He always understood that she was no ordinary mother. But then, Franca was also no ordinary friend.” Sozzani will be deeply missed.
