Is This Controversial Shoe Style Coming Back From the Dead?
8:19:00 AMIt's safe to say there isn't another shoe style that rivals the polarizing feelings people have about flip-flops. In recent years, the fashion industry has agreed that flip-flops are not only unsightly, they're not the best for your feet, orthopedically speaking. That said, the nostalgia factor of flip-flops undoubtedly counts for something—many of us grew up wearing them out and about during the summer months before they slowly became the designated footwear for trips to the beach and spin class. But as is often the case in fashion, things fade in and out of relevance, and we've recently noticed a couple of indicators that could be signaling a return of the always controversial flip-flops.
One of the biggest takeaways of Alexander Wang's S/S 17 runway show was that most of the models (including Kendall Jenner) strutted down the catwalk wearing flip-flops with their edgy streetwear, but not just any flip-flops—embellished flip-flops. One of the prominent styles, featuring a thick bejeweled ankle strap is now available for pre-order (if you have $525 to spare for designer flip-flops). And we've noticed quite a few other designer brands have snuck flip-flops into their spring collections. Additionally, Vogue just did a profile on Hailee Steinfeld's new collaboration with rubber sandal purveyors Reef. She told them that she grew up wearing the brand's sandals, noting, "They can be worn anywhere, and in any way you feel expresses your personal style."
If this is all the convincing you need to bring them back from the dead, our best advice for pulling off the flip-flop look is to stick to simple, neutral styles (neon hues need not apply) or those with a fashion-girl twist.
