Emma Watson Makes an Important Statement About Feminism
7:23:00 PMEmma Watson is the current cover girl of Vanity Fair but it's not without some controversy—against which she's fighting back. In the striking, whimsical spread, shot by legendary photographer Tim Walker, Watson wears a range of looks from a fairytale-like tulle gown from Maison Francesco Scognamiglio to Balenciaga suiting to Dior's white fencing suit. In one look, Watson wears a white roped Burberry bolero paired with a high-waisted skirt with a delicate tulle choker reminiscent of an Elizabethan ruff.
Watson, an outspoken feminist, UN Women Goodwill Ambassador, and the founder of the HeForShe campaign, has received criticism by some for the photo. Critics asserted that the revealing ensemble is cause for the actress and activist to not be taken seriously—that feminism and nudity are mutually exclusive.
"It just always reveals to me how many misconceptions and what a misunderstanding there is about what feminism is," Watson said to Reuters. "Feminism is about giving women choice. Feminism is not a stick with which to beat other women with. It's about freedom, it's about liberation, it's about equality." When asked about the controversy, Gloria Steinem told TMZ that "Feminists can wear anything they f—ing want."
