Hear Anna Wintour Fight Back Tears in a Heartfelt Speech

9:40:00 AM

We wouldn't blame you if you got distracted by the gorgeous red carpet looks at last night's CFDA Awards, but if you only paid attention to the outfits, you might have missed a special moment inside the event: Anna Wintour's emotional speech honoring her late friend Franca Sozzani, the editor in chief of Italian Vogue

Wintour posthumously awarded Sozzani the Fashion Icon Award with heartfelt words. "Franca and I were thrown into each other’s lives quickly, when we were hired to lead our magazines the very same week," Wintour said on stage. "But we became friends slowly, in part because both of us were independent spirits, each unsure of what to make of the other."

She went on to describe some of Sozzani's best qualities. "Those of us who visited her in her final months saw her be herself to the end: clever, stylish, beautiful, never self-pitying, full of irreverence and wit and life," she told the audience.

Wintour also recited lines from theologian Henry Scott Holland, which is when she appeared to fight back tears: "Death is nothing at all," she read. "I have only slipped away to the next room. I am I, and you are you..." All in all, it was a beautiful tribute to a fashion icon who will not soon be forgotten.
