If there's anyone who knows the ups and downs of swimsuit shopping, it's the people designing them. Which is why when we found ourselves on the hunt for the most flattering style, we turned to a professional to fill us in.

As the design director at Solid & Striped, Michelle Copelman has a handle on exactly what makes for a flattering swimsuit. Her number one rule? "It all comes down to what you feel comfortable in," she said. "And, of course, knowing your body."

Breaking it down further, while every woman should test the waters to find the suit that makes her feel best, Copelman does have a few tips for buying that flattering-on-everyone suit.

She advises, "I find one-pieces to be flattering on any body type, and I'm not talking about your grandmother's one-piece. There are so many great options on the market." She recommends looking for suits with flattering, feminine touches like an open back or scooped neckline.

Another unexpected element to look for: stripes. "Vertical stripes might not be everyone's first thought, but they are very flattering because they are elongating," Copelman says.
