French women have their own way of doing just about everything—they don't diet, they aren't into leggings, and when it comes to selfies, well, let's just say they have some strong feelings. "In France, taking a selfie is rather shameful. It's fun to do it from time to time with girlfriends, but if a selfie is taken too seriously, it's really frowned upon," Stéphanie Delpon, a Parisian creative,  told Vogue recently. "All you are really saying is: 'I spent hours taking a photo of myself from every angle; here's a photo where I find myself beautiful—now please admire me!' It's a bit unnerving, isn't it?"

While culturally, selfies may not hold the same clout in France as they do in the States, we have to say, not every Parisian is totally against these shots. Scroll through the feeds of our favorite trendsetters like Jeanne Damas and Camille Charrière, and you'll find a selfie every so often. But the shots often have a more candid feel—a full outfit shot taken in a mirror or a sliver of shoulder instead of a full head-on shot. The lesson: If you're going to take a selfie, keep it from feeling contrived.
