Blogger Peony Lim recently tied the knot and, like most wedding photos, the one she shared on social media made us zoom in right away on the dress. Seeing only the back, we can admire the elegant sleeveless cut, wide ballgown skirt, and cascading veil that flowed behind Lim and her new husband, Matthew. But instead of simply sharing a first look at her wedding—which has been a focus of several of her blog posts over the last several months—she used this picture she to make an important point.

“I’m sorry I have been absent online recently,” Lim captioned the post initially, going on to introduce her new husband and share some of the exciting details on their honeymoon. But things take a turn when the fashion insider says that their celebration was cut short when her husband had to have an emergency appendix surgery in a foreign country whose language neither of them spoke fluently. “It’s been a frightening struggle that neither of us could have foreseen but the experience has shown us how much we love each other,” Lim says, adding that they’re both back home now and her husband is recovering. “It's normally not my thing to share my private life but I think it's so important that you know that nothing runs smoothly for anyone all the time,” she ended her post, “and if you're struggling with something you're not alone. We are with you.”

It’s not the type of message we’re accustomed to hearing from some of our favorite bloggers. When Instagram affords you so many opportunities to edit images to near perfection, it’s common for us to scroll through our feed and see only positive, polished, and happy moments. It’s beyond refreshing that Lim took an opportunity to share such a beautiful image but give us the story behind it and remind us that real life is messy even when you have thousands of followers, are getting married, or have a few photo-editing apps at your disposal.
