Expert Opinion: This Is the Next Big Sneaker Trend

If you already consider yourself the proud owner of a pair of Stan Smiths or Air Force 1s? Congratulations, you're ahead of the trend. So says Joe La Puma, Complex's Director of Content Strategy and host of the publication's video series Sneaker Shopping"I think it’s time to retire the idea that women’s colorways have to be pink, purple or have glitter on them. That hasn’t been true for a while, and 2018 should fully put it to bed," he says via email interview.

La Puma notes that instead, he sees unisex styles are on the rise. Rather then  a trend or shoe being for one sex or another, he notes that sleek throwback styles tend to work universally. "I think this year saw a lot of women wearing Air Force 1s, Air Max 97s and really gravitating to these classic silhouette," he says. " It was a mix of new collaborations (Off-White, UNDFTD) and the classic colorways of those models that really moved the needle."

Also on the rise in 2018 will be celebrity-backed collaborations. "Bella Hadid had a Nike Cortez campaignSelena Gomez signed to Puma and Kendall Jenner recently signed with adidas," notes La Puma. " I expect to see a lot of energy behind these big celebrity-centric partnerships across multiple brands."

So, if you're looking ahead to the new year, consider looking back to the classics, and opting for styles that while originally designed for men, look just as good on a woman's feet.

Shop a few styles - both classic and modern – that we think fit the bill for the new year!
