Selena Gomez has been vocal about her ongoing struggle with Lupus, a chronic disease which can attach healthy tissue within the body. But this morning the performer made a shocking reveal when she opened up to her 126 million Instagram fans that she has recently undergone a kidney transplant due to her illness.

Gomez says she took a break from the spotlight this summer, despite simultaneously releasing new music, in order to take care of herself. “I found out I needed to get a kidney transplant due to my Lupus and was recovering. It was what I needed to do for my overall health,” she said in her post. In a few intimate portraits, Gomez also reveals that actress Francia Rasia was the donor for her kidney. “There aren’t words to describe how I can possibly thank my beautiful friend Francia Raisa. She gave me the ultimate gift and sacrifice by donating her kidney to me. I am incredibly blessed.”

Gomez has seen attending Fashion Week events over the past few days, hopefully a sign that the worst is behind her. And along with the support of her family, friends, and massive community of fans, we wish all the best for her as well as others living with this autoimmune disease. “Lupus continues to be very misunderstood,” Gomez says in her post, “but progress is being made.”
